Medication Safety

Prescribed medications are safe, and improve our quality of life.

Tell your Physician Assistant or health care provider about all medication, supplements and over-the-counter substances that you take.

Sometimes, safe supplements and safe over-the-counter react in bad ways…affecting your health. This can be life-threatening…and hospital emergency rooms are expensive.

Avoid being one of the estimated 7,000 deaths per year due to medication errors. Tell your Physician Assistant or health care provider about everything you take.

But, another million people are injured by medication errors each year! And, the death and injury from medication errors cost $3.5 to $5 Billion a year in additional health care costs.

The biggest issues of medication include confusion between generic names and brand names.

Sharing medications also causes medication errors. Never take someone else’s medication.

The medications most abused are laxatives and antacids.

And mixing over-the-counter medications with prescribed medications causes unknown consequences.

Your Physician Assistant knows about medication interactions…but only if you reveal everything.

If you have a hearing impairment, bring a family member to listen and interpret for you.

Also, get rid of medications that are over one year old.

Keep medications in a cool, dry place. The bathroom not the best place to keep medications.

You are wasting your medication money if you don’t take the medication correctly, if you don’t get the prescription filled or if you don’t follow through on taking the medication as prescribed.

Also, check warnings.

For example, some medications react with Grapefruit Juice.

So this, a food ingredient, grapefruit juice, can block medication so that not enough get into your bloodstream, or it can allow too much medication to enter your blood…causing an overdose.

Your Physician Assistant has the time to listen to you, and the time for you to listen, too. Pay attention and prevent medication errors.

Sugar Addiction

The Ubiquitous Additive

The bitter truth about our sweet obsession and sugar addition is that the sugar excess of your diet affects your health.

Sugar is the “Essential Additive” to replace fat in industrial food. But, sugar is not an alternative to eliminating fat for your health.

Sugar is everywhere…in food products. Some breakfast cereals are 30% sugar. Some “Low Fat” foods have as much sugar as candy.

And, most forms of processed food have hidden sugar.

Sugar and Visceral Fat

Not all sugar is created equal, but the sugar beast in our diets must be tamed.

For example, fructose (fruit sugar) increases visceral (organ) fat and doesn’t register to our bodies as we have eaten. So, fruit juice does not satisfy our hunger.

Sugar can cause cellular poisoning.

Fiber tames insulin, but fruit juice does not have fiber.

Anything that drives insulin up drives weight gain.

So, fruit juice drive weight up.

Insulin, is the main hormone for storing fat. Visceral fat releases hormones that relate to inflammation.

So, inflammatory disease can increase from excess sugar in our diets.

We used to believe…

“Calories in – Calories out!”

But this is the mistake that got us into this obesity mess.

What we know is that there is a “Thermic Effect” of food. So, not all calories are equal, and sugar calories store fat faster than fat calories.

Addiction to Sugar

Sugar affects the same receptors in the brain as nicotine, alcohol and cocaine. This means that we become addicted to sugar.

Ubiquity, toxicity, abuse from sugar.

For example, weight loss surgery may leave excess skin dangling on your body.

And, besides the cost of the weight loss surgery, you could face the cost of skin removal surgery two years later.

Each of these surgeries could cost as much as a small car. And, insurance does not cover the cost of most skin reduction surgeries.

But, whatever you do, use the kind of follow-up health testing and health management that your Physician Assistant advises.

You owe yourself the monitoring that keeps you recovering.

Your Physician Assistant advises you to “Loose Weight” to promote better health.

But this advice proves difficult to accomplish.

The reason: The more weight you loose, the less weight you have to move. So, moving less weight takes less effort.
