Everyone knows that walking is the best exercise.

We need to walk 3,00 steps per day for great health. But, walks as much as you can.

There are a lot of words that describe walking.

  • Amble
  • Dwadle
  • Hike
  • Jaunt
  • March
  • Meander
  • Plod
  • Roam
  • Sashay
  • Stomp
  • Stride
  • Stroll
  • Traipse
  • Trek
  • Trudge

But none of these captures the kind of walking that we need to perform for our health.

Healthy walking includes more than just “Putting in our Time” sightseeing around the block.

Healthy walking means keeping an aerobic pace, and taking enough posture-straightening, muscle lengthening steps.

And these steps need to be taken with quality, supportive shoes with the right muscles leading.

The right walking style and technique leads to avoiding pain when done right, and to decreasing pain if you are correcting poor walking habits.

Your Physician Assistant or other health care professional can demonstrate correct walking steps and posture. Just Ask!

And, if you live in a climate like San Antonio, Texas…you can walk outside…at certain times of the day…all year.

Modern Drug Shortages

With all the money medications cost, who would predict that the United States would experience a medication shortage issue?

And, aren’t we paying huge amounts for our prescription medications, while at the same time subsidizing medications for Third World countries?

The sad and scary fact is that the US has been experiencing medication shortages for years, and the shortages increase in scope and threat to life.

The medication shortage shows all the “Finger Pointing” of “They are the problem, not me” with blame enough to go around.

The truth: This is a complicated problem that cannot be fixed without major changes in drug manufacturing, distribution, oversight and government intervention.

Big pharmaceutical companies pay more for lobbyists than for taxes or research…so don’t expect government to step in and help you get the medication that you need to save your life.

Your best strategy: Stay healthy. Eat right, lose weight, exercise daily, avoid smoking…build your immune system.

Use psychological means to decrease stress, avoid drinking alcohol. Stay away from illegal drugs.

Seek lifestyle improvements and follow the advice of your Physician Assistant or other health care provider.

Do what you can to decrease your need for stronger, newer medications by healthy living.

Your Physician Assistant wants to decrease your dependence on medication, as much as you want to keep the money in your pocket instead of paying exorbitant amounts for breakthrough, new medications.

Does music soothe you, relax you, decrease stress for you?

If so, you are only human.

But, do you know that music can also increase the beneficial effects of the medication that you take?

Ask you Physician Assistant about the benefits of stress release on your body’s circulation, blood pressure and digestion.

Your Physician Assistant has time to listen to your needs and your symptoms…to advise and prescribe your best course of action.

But, do you have time to listen to music?

Not just any kind of music.

Revved-up dancing may provide some cardiac exercise, but avoid smoke-filled clubs to take in that extra oxygen.

Instead, listen to slow, natural sounding music. Some folks call this medication music.

The type doesn’t matter. As long as you slow down and relax.

Here are some examples…of various lengths…since a five minute clip isn’t enough for you to rewind.

Medication Safety

Prescribed medications are safe, and improve our quality of life.

Tell your Physician Assistant or health care provider about all medication, supplements and over-the-counter substances that you take.

Sometimes, safe supplements and safe over-the-counter react in bad ways…affecting your health. This can be life-threatening…and hospital emergency rooms are expensive.

Avoid being one of the estimated 7,000 deaths per year due to medication errors. Tell your Physician Assistant or health care provider about everything you take.

But, another million people are injured by medication errors each year! And, the death and injury from medication errors cost $3.5 to $5 Billion a year in additional health care costs.

The biggest issues of medication include confusion between generic names and brand names.

Sharing medications also causes medication errors. Never take someone else’s medication.

The medications most abused are laxatives and antacids.

And mixing over-the-counter medications with prescribed medications causes unknown consequences.

Your Physician Assistant knows about medication interactions…but only if you reveal everything.

If you have a hearing impairment, bring a family member to listen and interpret for you.

Also, get rid of medications that are over one year old.

Keep medications in a cool, dry place. The bathroom not the best place to keep medications.

You are wasting your medication money if you don’t take the medication correctly, if you don’t get the prescription filled or if you don’t follow through on taking the medication as prescribed.

Also, check warnings.

For example, some medications react with Grapefruit Juice.

So this, a food ingredient, grapefruit juice, can block medication so that not enough get into your bloodstream, or it can allow too much medication to enter your blood…causing an overdose.

Your Physician Assistant has the time to listen to you, and the time for you to listen, too. Pay attention and prevent medication errors.

Weight Training Exercise for Seniors

Much scientific information favors walking as the perfect exercise for seniors. Seniors should walk as long as they can do so without pain.

However, seniors can add other, speedy and low-impact exercises to their health and fitness routines. Again, the key is to avoid pain.

This means that stretches and weights should be kept moderate and low-impact. And intensity levels need to stop well below exhaustion levels.

This is not weight lifting to see who can lift the heaviest weights, or who can do the most sets of an exercise.

And, be sure to get a checkup from a Physician Assistant or other licensed and certifies health care provider before starting.

And schedule frequent checkups, as determined by your Physician Assistant or health care expert because medication changes may be needed to adjust for changes in increased metabolism, improved circulation and the enhanced ability of your body to make use of vitamins and minerals from your food.

Follow your Physician Assistant’s advice, and make a gradual change to better health by gradual increases to your seniors’ exercise and fitness routines.
